This course examines the social context, ethical foundations, and professional responsibilities of practitioners in computing. Students explore the historical and societal impact of information and communication technology; philosophical frameworks for ethical decision-making; Philippine and international laws governing data privacy, cybercrime, e-commerce, and intellectual property; and professional codes of conduct observed by computing organizations such as the ACM and IEEE Computer Society. Because this section has no programming or systems pre-requisite, early sessions build a shared foundation in ethical reasoning and legal literacy before progressing to applied case analysis, so that students entering from different year levels and programs (BSCS, BSIT, and ACT) start from a common baseline. The course culminates in the analysis of emerging issues including artificial intelligence, automation, and sustainable computing and requires students to formulate a personal code of professional conduct they can carry into their careers.
